Violent criminal activity has become a serious problem in Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Zacharia Diing Akol, director of training at the Sudd Institute, an independent research organization based in Juba, published a commentary on 13 December 2012 titled "Juba's Insecurity: A Challenge to State Authority and Credibility."

His analysis explores the magnitude of the growing insecurity in Juba. He reports a number of political assassinations and the death of about 35 persons in the Eritrean community. He concludes that the issue of insecurity in Juba is a problem that threatens the foundation of the newly established country.
