a guilty pleasure of mine: going into stores to try on clothes i can't afford. occasionally, when one slips off the hanger and into my hand, then to the cash register and home, it hangs there in the closet with the tags on as though waiting for some other person to wear it. unpacking my clothes into the new apartment, i am stunned at the amount of tags. i have heard this referred to as poverty consciousness.
