Darfur10: Drawings and Memories of Darfur

From Enough blogs Thu Mar 7 2013, 22:44:33

Many of the more than 2 million Darfuris still displaced by the decade-long conflict are women and children. Some were born in refugee and internally displaced persons camps and have only known those places as home. Others were children when the conflict began and have become adolescents and young adults in these camps, but they still hold vivid memories of the violence that forced them to leave their homes in Darfur.

The photos below are of drawings by just some of the hundreds of thousands of young

Darfuri refugees whose lives are on hold until they can return home to a peaceful Darfur. The drawings were collected during two Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program trips to the refugee camps in eastern Chad. The photographs show students displaying their drawings of what they remembered from their experiences in the conflict to former NBA star Tracy McGrady, co-founder of DDT. The drawings, collected by DDT partner i-ACT, depict images of armed military men creeping into and raiding villages as children and families flee the attacks.

These detailed pictures show the children's close proximity and vivid memories of the violence. They illustrate how these memories are seared in these children's minds, and they give us a glimpse into their lives and their perspectives.
